Uttam Beck

Uttam Beck is a Textile Designer currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Fashion Business Management from Indian Institute of Art and Design with Kingston University, London. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Textile Design from National Institute of Fashion Technology, Mumbai.  He has been in roles of Textile Designer cum Marketing Executive with JHARCRAFT, as a merchandiser with Marsil Exports and a Textile Designer with Sutlej Textiles and Industries Ltd as well as with Maharani Embroidery.

Hailing from Ranchi, Uttam attended St. Xavier’s School and Oxford School. His creative interest took him to NIFT Mumbai where he graduated in 2017. He worked for some time in Mumbaai following graduation. Coming back to Ranchi he took up the role of a Marketing Executive cum Textile Designer in Jharcraft. He has been inclined towards including indigenous art and patterns like Godna and Sohrai into textiles. Design to him means expressing oneself through basic elements which essentially makes the customers feel delighted as much as the designer. His memorable projects include Kantha design in bright colours in Tasar silk scarfs. His graduation project was about employing natural elements and natural colours into textiles like bed covers, curtains etc. He further worked with Marsil Exports which is an agency for high end embroidery for big brands like Versace, Gucci, Louis Vuitton. At Marsil Exports his role was to replicate designs and make the embroidery on the textile through craftsmen before sending it abroad. He has worked as a content writer while interning with a company based in Dubai.

Generating employment through design education is one of his key interests. He strongly believes that the professional knowledge and skills needs to be dissipated to the underprivileged so as to break the vicious cycle of poverty.
