Documenting Tribal Communities

  • To explore a model of engagement with designers of tribal origin and expert guest through sharing of case studies, followed by a brainstorming session. Case study presentations for a wider world view and sensitization to issues that indigenous groups face. We managed to do this through Anirban Dutta Gupta’s presentations.
  • To start a conversation on how designers can engage with tribal communities. We managed to make a good start with the Zoom Breakout Sessions.
  • To identify problem areas, challenges and opportunities while working with tribal communities for possible project development. We managed to make a good start with the Zoom Breakout Sessions.

UNESCO WNICBR 2021 and Panda Award Winning Filmmaker, Photographer, Ethnographer and Communication Designer, Anirban Dutta Gupta, shared his experiences of working in the Andamans to highlight the indigenous knowledge system of the Onges that saved the community from the tsunami devastation; presented the redevelopment solution of housing through co-design with the hunting gathering community; shared community insights on the need and kind of museums along with the evolution of artifacts with modern influence; and gave insights into the inner dynamics of the hunting and gathering community of the Jarawas through the honey collection process.
