TRIBAL DESIGN FORUM

Designing Tribal Futures

OVERVIEW

Tribal Design Forum is a growing platform to celebrate tribal knowledge systems, epistemologies and contemporary tribal talent.

It brings together tribal and Indigenous professionals, scholars, artists, designers, and knowledge holders who are bridging ancestral wisdom with modern disciplines. At its heart, TDF is a space of connection – between the past and the present, between local and global, between memory and imagination.

It invites the current generation of tribal professionals across diverse sectors to reconnect with their heritage, culture, and ways of knowing, and to explore how these foundations can help shape a shared, ethical, and sustainable future – while retaining cultural and knowledge sovereignty.

From TDF 1.0 to TDF 2.0

TDF 1.0 (2021–2025) began as a pioneering community of multidisciplinary designers and creative professionals from diverse tribes of India, coming together to share, learn, and celebrate tribal aesthetics and design frameworks. It served as a foundation for connection and visibility within the design ecosystem.

TDF 2.0 (2025 onwards) expands that mission into a broader multidisciplinary community across sectors, welcoming tribal professionals in design, education, health, technology, policy, entrepreneurship, and beyond as Members of TDF. It focuses on celebrating tribal knowledge systems, fostering cultural and knowledge sovereignty, and building bridges with global networks for a collaborative, ethical and shared future.

TDF also welcomes all those who are working closely with tribal communities or are interested in learning more about tribal communities and worldviews from members of the tribal or indigenous communities, as Patrons of TDF.

OVERVIEW

Facilitate Shared Futures through Collaboration

Foster respectful, cross-cultural learning and co-creation rooted in mutual respect, equity, and relational thinking.

Build Living Networks and Archives

Create open spaces of learning, documentation, and co- thinking – where memory is not static but alive, growing, and generously shared.

METHODOLOGY

TDF 2.0’s approach is rooted, relational, and evolving. It values the local and the global, the traditional and the contemporary, the poetic and the practical.

Learning as Circle

Wisdom sessions from tribal elders, artists, researchers, and global Indigenous peers – open to all, rooted in exchange and respect.

Bridging with Integrity

Facilitate global-local partnerships that center tribal agency and cultural clarity – never compromising sovereignty.

Mentorship Ecosystems

Intergenerational mentoring that values both tradition and innovation – enabling youth to lead with groundedness.

Living Archive & Curriculum

A growing, evolving record of tribal design thought, frameworks, creativity, and futures- thinking – created by us, for us, with us.

Narrative Design

Using storytelling, design, film, research, and pedagogy to make tribal knowledge systems visible, accessible, and influential in the world.

Ethical Representation

TDF advocates for tribal leadership in how tribal narratives are framed – in art, design, technology, education, and diplomacy.

CLOSING VISION

TDF 2.0 is not a platform of resistance – It is a platform of return, connection and celebration.

It is where tribal imagination becomes a design language of the future. It is where memory does not stay behind – it walks forward with us.

And every gathering, archive, and campaign ends with the same invocation:
Designing Tribal Futures.

Tribes in Transition
Tribal communities are on a crossroads with generations from the past and the present coming together to own their future.
Change – the only constant in life has brought dynamic waves of ebb and flow in the tribal communities.
Much has been lost in the tide of time but now the narratives are changing.
The once docile hibernating tribes are slowly expanding their wings to take their flight.
Young and old, city folks and village folks – all full of aspirations and creative expressions are coming together to not only understand and acknowledge but also embrace their tribal heritage.
Metamorphosis is ongoing among the tribals and the tribes are transitioning to fly
not on borrowed identities but their own.
Future abounds with expressing a contemporary idea of who and what is a “Tribal” with the tribes themselves exercising their right to self-determination.

CORE VALUES

The ethos of TDF is captured through 7 guiding values – each a lens, each a practice:

1. Belonging & Kinship

Rooted in tribal knowledge systems that uphold community, care, and trust – where every voice belongs.

2. Listening & Reciprocity

Valuing tribal ways of knowing that begin in humility, relationship, and respectful exchange.

3. Resilience & Memory

Carrying tribal epistemologies forward as living knowledge, rising rooted in generations of wisdom and wholeness.

4. Justice & Sovereignty

Protecting the right to define, own, and share our stories, frameworks and ways of knowing on our terms.

5. Balance & Care

Practicing design that sustains harmony among people, nature, culture and knowledge traditions.

6. Respect & Dignity

Affirming the worth and dignity of every knowledge system, and every being, human and non-human, through conscious and caring engagement.

7. Future & Innovation

Continuing ancestral rhythms into the future with courage and creativity – welcoming others to walk beside us, not ahead.

TDF is managed by a young group of the TDF Council, which comprises members who have been working voluntarily for the past four years, building, shaping, and managing this community.

TDF is a community. It funds itself and its activities through the contributions of its members and patrons. The scale and frequency of our activities depends on how smartly and frugally TDF is able to utilise the fund that gets created from these contributions to deliver maximum impact, value, and experience.
